Fauna of Africa
JOrnitho: I'm making this new topic after Биолог mentioned some interesting ideas for descendants of the tree hyraxes with more adaptations for an arboreal lifestyle. I was also thinking that they could be adapted to jump between branches and even trees. Биолог, do you have more ideas about these animals?
лягушка: JOrnitho Good animal!
медведь: Interesting animal!
JOrnitho: Would the Socotra Archipelago still exist? I thought that, without human presence, it could have new species and ecosystems.
Автор: JOrnitho пишет: Would the Socotra Archipelago still exist? Socotra represents the archipelago of continental origin. So, I think it would exist in Neocene also. Based on the idea of split of Africa and shift of Zinj Land eastward, we may predict that Socotra will be geologically active zone due to the movement of Zinj Land.

With the humans being extinct, I thought that there could be more woods and forests.
Автор: JOrnitho пишет: there could be more woods and forests the climate is dry, so the forests may be composed of dry-resistant plants. In Russian part of forum, we have a description of relic dwarf dromedary camel (insular dwarfism).

Among the plants, could be a descendant of the Dracaena cinnabari. This species is still surviving in Socotra nowadays, maybe the disappearance of humans could allow it to spread once again. Could this dwarf dromedary be like the extinct Stenomylus? With a gazelle-like appearence.
Автор: JOrnitho пишет: With a gazelle-like appearence. The terrain of Socotra is mountanous, so the goatlike appearance with shorter legs and wide toes is more probable.
JOrnitho: Автор пишет: The terrain of Socotra is mountanous, so the goatlike appearance with shorter legs and wide toes is more probable. Good idea! The main predator could be a descendant of small Indian civet (Viverricula indica), adapted to hunt these camels.
JOrnitho: I read the description of the Noonda and is siad that populations of leopards survived in isolated areas, with it being one of their descendants. Besides Zinj Land, where else the leopards could have survived? Perhaps India or somewhere else in Asia?
Monstrel: Here's an idea: A bear-sized (250 kg) honey badger descendant living in the Sahara Savannah.
Chmumrikk: An interesting idea. Will this species be a predator or an omnivore?
JOrnitho: It's a good idea! If it's omnivore, maybe it could eat honey of the descendants of African bees and have a relationship with the descendants of Indicatoridae birds, being really guided by them to the hives.
Monstrel: Yep, its a omnivore with a bias towards meat. Not a bad idea with the African bees and honeyguide descendants. Not good with Latin names but for its common name I'm thinking something like the Bearatel (Bear + Ratel)
Автор: Monstrel пишет: its a omnivore with a bias towards meat We already have grokk in Southern Europe and North Africa. Maybe, somewhere on Zinj Land? Or in South Africa?
Monstrel: How about Zinj Land then? It occupies the top predator spot on the savannahs and open plains, while the Noonda (the tiger-sized leopard descendant) prowls the jungles and woodland. Occasionally, they could come into conflict when their territories overlap.
JOrnitho: Monstrel пишет: Not good with Latin names but for its common name I'm thinking something like the Bearatel (Bear + Ratel) Going by latin names, it could be Arctomelliphagus (bear+honey badger's name).
Monstrel: That sounds awesome!
Автор: JOrnitho пишет: Going by latin names The hardest thing is "Adam's task" - the choosing of the common name for the invented species. Sometimes it is even harder, than to make a description.
Monstrel: I see what you mean. What do think of the Bearatel idea
