Projects on speculative biology and miscellaneous

Биолог: A topic for our foreign members to post information on speculative biology projects found and to discuss everything else. The posts about projects can be copied (not moved) from here to the "Blue Chimera" collection topic.

JOrnitho: I started a sort off project back in 2019 called Alter Quarter in the Speculative Evolution forum. It's about some random species that survived the extinctions in the Quartenary and reached modern times. Some evolved in other species, while some stayed the sane. I had help of Pavel Volkov for choosing the name and for some species. I stopped working own it due to needing to concentrate in the last year of my college. Perhaps I'll return to it this year. Here is the link for it: https://specevo.jcink.net/index.php?showtopic=1051&st=0

Биолог: JOrnitho Wow, thanks for sharing! A very interesting one! And good luck to you for graduating from the college!

Биолог: Автор Once great Spec project had been created by team gave rise to some paleontologists. Seemingly a conjunction (probably and) is needed after "team". I hope, there will be famous scientists among Neocene project contributors! Thanks, that would be a marvellous outcome! Although a not so famous scientist will also do

Биолог: JOrnitho the project helped me decide to change from History to Biology. So it already had an impact in my life. Great! Congratulations!

Биолог: wovoka history of the animal world Hey, paleontology also includes paleobotany and other branches! But, please, do not maintain offtop any further.

wovoka: Биолог пишет: Hey, paleontology also includes paleobotany and other branches! I did not translate correctly, I meant the history of wildlife.

Биолог: wovoka history of wildlife Oh yes, that would be much better

JOrnitho: Hello! I had been busy these last months, but I still want to help this wonderful project. I was reading an article that showed how diverse the fauna of necrophagous birds of South America was during the Quaternary. This made me think about the Neocene. I know that the Acatou already is the largest Cathartidae bird there, but there is the description of smaller and medium sized genera?

Биолог: JOrnitho I know that the Acatou already is the largest Cathartidae bird there, but there is the description of smaller and medium sized genera? I do not really understand the question. If you're asking about the possibility to make some more predatory birds in SA, - they are hardly acceptable because their ecological niche is already occupied by acatou and some other species, smaller than acatou.

JOrnitho: Биолог пишет: I do not really understand the question. I think that I wasn't clear. I mean, if the project already have descriptions of smaller and medium sized species of Cathartidae for South America. Species that are more like their ancestors, living as necrophagous.

Биолог: JOrnitho No, smaller cathartids are not present, but their niche is already occupied by other predatory birds coming from other holocene families.

JOrnitho: I found this news about hybridzation between proboscid monkeys and the silver langur and wanted to share here. This made me think if it could happen in the Neocene. These new genes passing down through the generations of this population could make a new species of monkey appear in the Neocene. https://allthatsinteresting.com/borneo-hybrid-monkey

Биолог: JOrnitho Interesting, thanks! But we still do not know if this hybrid is really fertile as to its possibility to reproduce without new crosses with its "parents" (back-cross). Neocene speculates about the living world of the Earth in a specified time point in the future, so it is difficult to tell if such crossing is possible in neocene. But the Author could accept a descendant of this peculiar hybrid to Neocene project
